How do you usually ask to exchange contact information with a potential friend you just met?

If they say yes, then ask what their preferred method of getting in touch would be.

"I'm going to get going, but it was great meeting you - shall we exchange email addresses to stay in touch?"

"I've got to get going but I really enjoyed meeting you - would you like to grab coffee sometime and continue our conversation?"
